Profile: Bob Eberhard - (Nov/Dec 2000)

The DA Committee are pleased that the CTC Awards Committee have agreed to the proposal that a Certificate of Merit should be awarded to Bob Eberhard.

The Award is for Bob's work towards rights to ride in Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley and Tandridge and for the considerable time and energy Bob has given to improving access for cyclists in his home area of Epsom & Ewell. Since 1990 he has served on five forum groups and Epsom Borough can now claim to have the most extensive cycle routes network in Surrey.

The DA and particularly the Cheam and Morden members have been grateful for Bob's organising activities over many years. Since 1972 he has run the C&M Map Reading Contest. It has been a model for testing proficiency in map reading and this has been the first time for over 28 years that Bob's challenge to our skills has not appeared as a major event in the list of rides. The summer of 2000 didn't quite seem the same!

As Runs Secretary for the Cheam & Morden, Bob has given Section members extraordinary service. He has arranged their list of rides since 1972, providing for a ride each week over 28 years. This has required careful venues and appointing of leaders. It is probably a continuity which few other clubs and their organisers can match. C&M members all recognise that Bob's disciplined and knowledgeable approach has resulted in great enjoyment of their rides.

Bob is well known for his opposition to the motor car with its damaging effects on cycling and the environment. There are anecdotes about Bob's unexpectedly fierce, verbal treatment of motorists whom Bob has believed to be behaving unreasonably. His opposition to the car is also seen in his advocacy of train-assisted rides. He plans these for the C&M with a special knowledge of Sunday timetables, platform changes, best value ticket buys and rolling stock and guard's van availability. I personally find these are amongst the most enjoyable of our rides.

It is planned to award a framed certificate to Bob at the DA AGM on Sunday, 26th November.
